REDUCE ASTHMA, ALLERGY TRIGGERS "ONE ROOM AT A TIME," ADVISES SOAP AND DETERGENT ASSOCIATION

WASHINGTON, D.C., April 25, 2002 - Families battling asthma and allergies this time of the year can help reduce flare-ups with an easy to follow room-by-room cleaning plan, according to free online help from The Soap and Detergent Association (SDA).

SDA's website - www.cleaning101.com. -- offers advice for families in English and Spanish on how to control the clutter that allows "asthma triggers" to build up around the home.

"Most of us spend about 90 percent of our time indoors, which is where many of the triggers lie in wait to make life miserable for asthma and allergy sufferers," said Nancy Bock, SDA's Director of Consumer Education. "Fortunately, families can take simple yet effective steps in their own homes to reduce or eliminate the triggers that cause asthma and allergy flare-ups."

The most common triggers in and around the home are dust mites, animal dander, cockroaches and their droppings, mold and mildew, and pollen.

SDA has published "Clean and Healthy, Cleaning to Control Asthma and Allergies," which offers a room-by-room Allergen Control Plan for attacking those triggers.

"Set up your cleaning plan one room at a time, beginning with where the allergy sufferer sleeps," says SDA's Bock. "For example: wash the bedding and curtains, dust and vacuum, clean the window sills and frames, and wet mop the floors."

"Clean and Healthy" is available online in English and Spanish at www.cleaning101.com.
