RESEARCHER HONORED WITH 2003 SDA GLYCERINE INNOVATION AWARD
KANSAS CITY, MO, May 5, 2003 - Research aimed at developing a glycerine derivative for use as a renewable fuel is the recipient of the first-ever Soap and Detergent Association (SDA) Glycerine Innovation Research Award. The Award was presented at the 94th Annual Meeting and Expo of the American Oil Chemists' Society (AOCS) in Kansas City. The inaugural Award winner is Joia Spooner-Wyman, an engineer with Procter & Gamble Chemicals in Cincinnati, Ohio. She presented a summary on her research at a meeting of the AOCS Industrial Oil Products Division. The SDA Award recognizes outstanding achievement for research into new applications for glycerine with particular emphasis on commercial viability. The Award includes a $3,000 honorarium, a commemorative plaque and the opportunity to present the research at the AOCS Annual Meeting. Spooner-Wyman and her colleagues' project is focused on the development of di butoxy glycerine (DBG), a fuel oxygenate that reduces particulate matter emissions from compression ignition engines. The goal of the research, according to Spooner-Wyman, is to deliver DBG for use in fuels in response to the growing concern over increases in excess glycerine worldwide. The award review panel consisted of members of SDA's Oleochemicals Committee and the Industrial Oil Products Division of AOCS. SDA is the U.S. trade association home of oleochemical producers for all applications. "SDA is proud to work with AOCS and the oleochemical industry in the pursuit of new applications and uses for glycerine," said Richard Sedlak, SDA Vice President, Technical and International Affairs. ### The Soap and Detergent Association (www.cleaning101.com) is the non-profit trade association representing manufacturers of household, industrial and institutional cleaning products; their ingredients; and finished packaging. SDA members produce more than 90% of the cleaning products marketed in the U.S. SDA is located at 1500 K Street, NW, Suite 300, Washington, DC 20005. |
