Dust mites in the bedroom are THE number one problem for those with allergies and asthma.  But they're nothing that a few basic actions can't help solve.

SHEETS and PILLOWS
Launder weekly*
  • Wash two pillows at a time to keep the load balanced. Agitate only one to two minutes on a gentle cycle.
  • Dry pillows in the dryer. Periodically take them out and fluff them to prevent clumping as they dry.

BLANKETS,
COMFORTERS,
MATTRESS PADS
Launder at least four times per year* (more often if someone is severely allergic to dust mites)
  • Pretreat heavily soiled areas with prewash soil and stain remover.
  • Set washer to: high water level, delicate agitation and normal spin.
  • Add detergent, partially fill washer with warm water and stop the washer.
  • Put comforter, blanket or mattress pad into the washer, pushing down to submerge.
  • Turn washer back on.
  • Check occasionally to be sure item is completely submerged.
  • Tumble dry, adding a few dry, clean towels to help prevent clumping.
  • Periodically rearrange large items so they dry evenly.

ELECTRIC BLANKETS
Launder at least four times per year (more often if someone is severely allergic to dust mites)
  • Machine wash using a gentle cycle and a short agitation time (about two to three minutes).
  • Do not dry in a dryer unless the care label recommends it. Hang the blanket over two lines, or lay it flat to dry.
  • Never dryclean an electric blanket - the chemicals may ruin the wiring.

* Pillows and comforters encased in allergen-impermeable covers don't need to be laundered frequently. Use a damp cloth to wipe off covers at least four times per year. Launder them occasionally, following cover manufacturer's instructions.

Always follow care instructions for washable items. Be aware that care labels may not be attached. Save laundry instructions on any new items and keep them accessible, near your washing machine.

Here's how to know:

  • Place the item in the empty washer tub.
  • If the comforter fits loosely in the washer and the top row of tub holes is visible, it's safe to wash it.
  • If the top row of holes is not visible, the comforter is too large and should be laundered in a commercial washer at a laundromat.

Don't forget to add your washable area rugs, curtains and other soft goods to your laundry schedule.
