Food and water invite cockroaches - and cockroach remains and droppings are allergens. Here are simple steps to keep the crawlers away.

- Wash dishes as soon as possible. Don't let them pile up in the sink, and run the dishwasher as soon as it's full - or run the "rinse and hold" cycle if it takes awhile to accumulate a full load.
- Clean up food spills, crumbs and liquids on countertops right away.
- Empty trash daily. Clean garbage cans/recycling bins frequently, using an all-purpose or disinfectant (antibacterial) cleaner. Be sure to let the cans dry out before replacing the liner.
- Clean food and grease from cooktops and other appliances. Use a nonabrasive, all-purpose cleaner.
- Regularly clean under and behind appliances, where crumbs and grease may collect. Vacuum first, then clean.
