Using Laundry Products In High-Efficiency Washers

Using Laundry Detergents
  • Most of the new washers have detergent dispensers. Follow the washer manufacturer's instructions to properly use the detergent dispenser.
  • If there is no dispenser, follow the washer use and care guide.
  • Follow the instructions on the detergent package for the amount of detergent to use. If there is no recommended amount for high-efficiency washers, contact the detergent manufacturer, or follow the washer use and care guide instructions.
  • Don't mix powder and liquid detergents in the same dispenser compartment, as the mixture may “cake” in the dispenser.

Using Laundry Additives
Rinse-Added Fabric Softeners
  • Add fabric softener to the fabric softener dispenser so it gets dispensed at the right time. Follow the washer manufacturer's instructions for proper use of the dispenser.

  • Ball-type fabric softener dispensers should not be used in a tumbler washer as the tumbling action causes the softener to be released before the rinse cycle.
Pretreat and Presoak Products
  • Pretreats and presoaks are usually low sudsing; use them as you would with a traditional agitator washer.
Water Softener Additives
  • Follow the water softener manufacturer's recommendations for the proper amount to use.
Note: The amount of water softener may be able to be reduced since there is less water to soften.

  • Add powder or liquid softener to the empty tub before adding the clothes.
