FDA DEPUTY COMMISSIONER TO ADDRESS FALL MEETING

The person currently in charge of running the Food and Drug Administration, Deputy Commissioner Lester Crawford, will address SDA's Fall Meeting on Wednesday, October 2.

The Fall Meeting, scheduled for October 1-3, will be held at the Hilton Arlington & Towers, 950 North Stafford Street, Arlington, Virginia (at the Ballston Metro station a few minutes from downtown Washington).

Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson named Dr. Crawford FDA Deputy Commissioner on February 25, 2002. He is the senior official in charge at FDA, pending the nomination and confirmation of a permanent FDA Commissioner.

Dr. Crawford previously served as head of the Center for Food and Nutrition Policy at Virginia Tech. He also served as administrator of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service from 1987 to 1991 and as director of the FDA's Center for Veterinary Medicine from 1978 to 1980, and again from 1982 to 1985.

"SDA members will have a rare opportunity to hear Dr. Crawford's perspective on running the FDA's day-to-day operations and the direction of future FDA policy," said Ernie Rosenberg, SDA President. "Members will also have a chance to ask questions about regulations affecting our industry, including the agency's Tentative Final Monograph for Topical Antimicrobial Products."

The luncheon will begin at 11:30 a.m.
