Food and water invite cockroaches - and cockroach remains and droppings are allergens.
Here are simple steps to keep the crawlers away.

  • Wash dishes as soon as possible. Don't let them pile up in the sink, and run the dishwasher as soon as it's full - or run the "rinse and hold" cycle if it takes awhile to accumulate a full load.
  • Clean up food spills, crumbs and liquids on countertops right away.
  • Empty trash daily. Clean garbage cans/recycling bins frequently, using an all-purpose or disinfectant (antibacterial) cleaner. Be sure to let the cans dry out before replacing the liner.
  • Clean food and grease from cooktops and other appliances. Use a nonabrasive, all-purpose cleaner.
  • Regularly clean under and behind appliances, where crumbs and grease may collect. Vacuum first, then clean.

The base grille and condenser coils of refrigerators collect dust and grime which attract cockroaches. Clean them regularly.
  • Check the user's guide for cleaning instructions.
  • Turn controls off and unplug the refrigerator before cleaning.
  • Remove the grille and vacuum the coils. Clean grille and wipe down coils using a hand dishwashing detergent or all-purpose cleaner, unless another product is recommended in the user's guide.
Clean grilles and coils allow the refrigerator to work more efficiently.

The inside of the refrigerator is moist and may have food spills, which allow bacteria and mold to grow.

  • Clean up spills immediately, especially raw meat, poultry and fish juices.
  • Clean walls and shelves regularly using a non-abrasive, all-purpose cleaner or a solution of baking soda and water.

  • Using a disinfectant (antibacterial) cleaner to clean kitchen countertops can kill bacteria that may be found in raw meat, poultry or fish. Follow label direction for proper use.
  • Wash your hands before preparing, serving or eating food!
