Launder washable garments using powdered laundry detergent and the hottest water suitable for the garments. Continue laundering garments until soot and/or odor are removed. You may have to launder as many as five times.
For stubborn stains: Launder, using liquid household bleach (sodium hypochlorite), if safe for fabric (follow label directions); use color-safe bleach for other garments. Note: Smoke-damaged garments may not be able to be restored, depending on the fabric and the extent of the soot/smoke damage. Note: Some dry cleaners can use ozone treatment to remove smoke damage from some fabrics. The Association of Specialists in Cleaning and Restoration (ASCR) may be able to provide you with additional information on carpet, drapery and fabric restoration.
