The honor was presented at the 2004 Annual Meeting & Expo of the American Oil Chemists' Society (AOCS) in Cincinnati, OH. The meeting was held in conjunction with SDA's Mid-Year Meeting.
Masahiko Fukayama and Noriko Fujio, researchers with Tokyo-based NOF Corporation, received a $3,000 honoraria and a commemorative plaque. The SDA Award recognizes outstanding achievement for research into new applications for glycerine with particular emphasis on commercial viability. SDA is the U.S. trade association home of oleochemical producers for all applications.
The new glycerine application was designed for use as an environmentally-friendly anti-freeze for use on roadways. The research found that the glycerine derivative was efficient at low temperatures, fast-acting, durable, water-soluble and harmless to grass and trees.
The 2nd annual SDA Glycerine Innovation Award was presented at a meeting of the AOCS Industrial Oil Products Division. The award review panel consisted of members of SDA's Oleochemical Committee and the AOCS Industrial Oil Products Division.
"Continued innovation of new uses of glycerine is critical to the economic health of the oleochemical industry globally," said Carol Collier, Marketing Manager, Uniqema, and Chair of SDA's Oleochemical Committee. This award is part of SDA's longstanding commitment to be a part of the innovation process."
