Contact: Brian Sansoni, 202-662-2517 (office); via email at bsansoni@cleaning101.com UNIVERSITY OF OKLAHOMA RESEARCHERS HONORED WITH SOAP Research on Oily Soil Removal Formulations WASHINGTON, D.C., May 11, 2004 - Researchers from the University of Oklahoma who studied new ways to effectively remove tough stains on fabrics are the recipients of the 2004 Soap and Detergent Association (SDA) Award.
The award is sponsored by SDA and the Surfactants & Detergents Division of the American Oil Chemists' Society (AOCS), and was presented during the AOCS 95th Annual Meeting and Expo in Cincinnati, OH. The annual award honors the best technical paper published in the Journal of Surfactants and Detergents, a publication of AOCS Press.
The paper, "Linker-Modified Microemulsions for a Variety of Oils and Surfactants," was featured in the October 2003 issue of the Journal. The recipients received their award at an AOCS Surfactants & Detergents Division luncheon.
Commemorative plaques were presented to this year's honorees: Edgar Acosta, Phuong Do Mai, Jeffrey H. Harwell and David A. Sabatini. The researchers represent the University of Oklahoma's School of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science, School of Civil Engineering and Environmental Science and Institute for Applied Surfactant Research.
This research demonstrates the ability of linker molecules, used along with surfactants, to improve the efficiency and economics of microemulsion-based oily-soil removal systems. These linker molecules also improve the robustness of the system by allowing them to be used for a wider range of oily-soils. Still in its infancy, linker-based microemulsion systems show great promise to be used in a wide range of applications.

"SDA's long-standing relationship with AOCS continues to provide value for our members and the industry at-large by encouraging innovation through sound scientific research."
